Explanation of 2Thessalonians 2:1-12 and other verses, including 2Thessalonians 2:7 "For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way."

Explanation of Verses 1-12 from 2Thessalonians chapter 2.

In verse one our gathering together unto Him refers to when we meet The Lord in the air. Some verses that pertain to our gathering together which man refers to as the “pre tribulation rapture” which although is not a scriptural term but it is a term used by man to refer to an event that occurs in the scriptures. I will show some of the verses that pertain to this time when we are caught up.

1 Thessalonians 5:8-10

Authorized (King James) Version

“8 But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation. 9 For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ, 10 who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him.”

1 Thessalonians 4:17

Authorized (King James) Version

“17 then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.”

1 Corinthians 15:50-54

Authorized (King James) Version

“50 Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption. 51 Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. 53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. 54 So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.”

This is the redemption of the purchased possession and our blessed hope.

Ephesians 1:12-14

Authorized (King James) Version

“12 that we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ. 13 in whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, 14 which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.”

Titus 2:11-14

Authorized (King James) Version

“11 For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, 12 teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; 13 looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; 14 who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.”

Now there are other verses and one with discernment can see “pre trib rapture type verses” in many places especially in Paul’s Epistles where Paul revealed this mystery that was given to him. Now we can use other scriptures to see in a way how God operates and how He removes the righteous from the wicked BEFORE His wrath occurs. Look at the story of Abraham and Lot in Genesis for instance and how Lot was taken away from trouble.

Some things to look at are Genesis 18:20-32 and Genesis chapter 19, and Luke 17:26-30 which mentions this event. Now its enough information for another study entirely, but the point I want to establish from this is that we have a wonderful promise from The Lord in

1 Thessalonians 5:9

Authorized (King James) Version

“9 For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,”

It says what it says folks.

Now moving on more to the subject of our study here:

In verse 2 Paul is comforting the Thessalonians and reassuring them including the part which seems like someone wrote a fake latter to them by saying “nor by letter as from us,” which is not a letter at all that Paul wrote to them and he is showing them truth and is about to explain things to them.

2 Thessalonians 2:2

Authorized (King James) Version

“2 that ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.”

The end of verse 2 and verse 3 continues with the idea to not be deceived as to think that the day of Christ is at hand because THAT DAY shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition.

2 Thessalonians 2:3

Authorized (King James) Version

“3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;”

Verse 4 tells about how this man, who is the son of perdition will oppose and essentially self proclaim himself as being above anything that is God or worshipped and that he is posing as an imitator and basically making himself God by sitting in the temple of God, and “shewing himself that he is God” when he is not God. This man is an imitator, a FALSE CHRIST.

2 Thessalonians 2:4

Authorized (King James) Version

“4 who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.”

Matthew 24:15-28

Authorized (King James) Version

“15 When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:) 16 then let them which be in Judæa flee into the mountains: 17 let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house: 18 neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes. 19 And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days! 20 But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day: 21 for then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. 22 And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect’s sake those days shall be shortened.

23 Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not. 24 For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. 25 Behold, I have told you before. 26 Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not. 27 For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. 28 For wheresoever the carcase is, there will the eagles be gathered together.”

From Swordsearcher, I got these verses that pertain to this:

Daniel 8:13 Then I heard one saint speaking, and another saint said unto that certain saint which spake, How long shall be the vision concerning the daily sacrifice, and the transgression of desolation, to give both the sanctuary and the host to be trodden under foot?

Daniel 9:27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

Daniel 12:11 And from the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the abomination that maketh desolate set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days.

Again this is a study in of itself, which may be very big, and is beyond the simple scope of this particular study of which I’m moreso limited to my experience with Paul’s Epistles and Matthew. I’m definitely much more studied in the New Testament than I am of the Old Testament. I also want to limit my studies to what little I actually DO know so that I don’t mislead people with information I’ve not fully understood or covered in order to best present my understanding that The Lord gave me. Also it would be quite the undertaking for me at the moment as I’d like to reread Revelation, Daniel, and the Prophets and Minor Prophets to get a better understanding of this subject as well as others that pertain to other things that occur at that time and future events to be more well rounded in my knowledge of the scriptures.

Now back to the study, in verse 5 Paul is reminding the brethren in Thessalonica that when he was with them he told them these things and how in verse 6 he talks about how they know what withholdeth (which is the saved Christians in the body of Christ) that he (now meaning the son of perdition) might be revealed in his time.

2 Thessalonians 2:5-6

Authorized (King James) Version

“5 Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things? 6 And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time.

We as saved Christians at the current time of this writing as well as the saved Christians of the past are that which withholdeth (withholds/prevents) that antichrist from showing up.

Paul further states this and elaborates in verse 7

2 Thessalonians 2:7

Authorized (King James) Version

“7 For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.”

(Emphasis on key words added)

To explain this verse the mystery of iniquity is already at work, but he who now letteth (hinders/prevents the man of sin) will let (hinders/prevent the man of sin), until he (saved Christians) be taken out of the way.

Image taken from Swordsearcher using the in-program "Websters 1828 Dictionary" definition number 5.

Now once we as saved Christians are taken out of the way, then verse 8 can happen.

2 Thessalonians 2:8

Authorized (King James) Version

“8 And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:”

Additional details about this man of sin, the son of perdition are given in verse 9 and 10.

2 Thessalonians 2:9-10

Authorized (King James) Version

“9 even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, 10 and with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.”

It looks like this is somehow Judas Iscariot based on certain verses from John.

John 17:12

Authorized (King James) Version

“12 While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.”

I also couldn’t help but notice what John 6:66 said regarding those that would leave God especially given the particular numbers 6 and 66 involved with that verse, as well as what verse 70 and 71 say regarding Judas Iscariot.

John 6:66-71

Authorized (King James) Version

“66 From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him. 67 Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away? 68 Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life. 69 And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God. 70 Jesus answered them, Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil? 71 He spake of Judas Iscariot the son of Simon: for he it was that should betray him, being one of the twelve.”

John 13:25-30

Authorized (King James) Version

“25 He then lying on Jesus’ breast saith unto him, Lord, who is it? 26 Jesus answered, He it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dipped it. And when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. 27 And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly. 28 Now no man at the table knew for what intent he spake this unto him. 29 For some of them thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said unto him, Buy those things that we have need of against the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor. 30 He then having received the sop went immediately out: and it was night.”

Now lets look at verse 10 (again) as well as verses 11 and 12.

2 Thessalonians 2:10-12

Authorized (King James) Version

“10 and with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: 12 that they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.”

This is talking about basically children of the devil who are them that perish due to the fact that they wont repent and wont get saved and will continue living in their sin (pleasure in unrighteousness) these are going to receive strong delusion, that they should believe a lie. These people if they miss being caught up then oh boy are they in for some trouble. Now I don’t know when the “rapture” and subsequent events is taking place, it’s a future time, maybe even near future but I don’t know, but you’d better get saved fast if you’re not saved right now.

If you don’t get saved now, even still get a King James Version Bible and READ Revelation chapters 13 and 14, look at Revelation 14:9-11 especially, and heed those warnings if you’re currently a lost person watching this because if the rapture happens then you’ll need that information.

You’re gonna wanna get saved RIGHT NOW so you don’t have to take part in that, if that time was to occur in YOUR say regular lifetime if you WERE to be left behind.

Get saved right now when things are easy. Trust me on this. Or don’t trust me. Read the Bible, get saved and trust The Lord Jesus Christ who died for YOUR SINS, and was buried and rose again on the third day according to the scriptures, and call upon Him for salvation. The result of not getting saved is going to be very bad in YOUR lifetime if you miss the catching up if it was to occur in your lifetime. Again, the rapture as well as a lot of things are yet to occur as they’re in the future, but now is the time to get saved so that you have that important assurance of salvation and that you’re not appointed to wrath.

I say these things in the event that you’re not saved, or if you’re on the fence, or if you’re not sure that your saved so that you DO GET SAVED and have assurance of your salvation.

You need to get saved because:

Ecclesiastes 7:20

Authorized (King James) Version

“20 For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.”

Romans 3:10

Authorized (King James) Version

“10 as it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:”

Matthew 10:28

Authorized (King James) Version

"28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell."

Mark 9:44

Authorized (King James) Version

“44 where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.”

Our sins lead us to hell, however, God doesn't want you to go to hell.

2 Peter 3:9

Authorized (King James) Version

"9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance."

1 John 4:10

Authorized (King James) Version

"10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins."

HOW TO BE SAVED:

Repent:

Acts 20:21

Authorized (King James) Version

“testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.”

2 Corinthians 7:9

"Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly manner, that ye might receive damage by us in nothing." KJV.

2 Corinthians 7:10

"For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death." KJV.

Understand YOU ARE A SINNER and only The Lord Jesus Christ can save you:

Romans 3:20-26

Authorized (King James) Version

“20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin. 21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; 22 even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: 23 for all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; 24 being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: 25 whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; 26 to declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.”

Romans 3:10

"as it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:" KJV.

Put your faith in the Gospel:

1 Corinthians 15:1-4

"Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; 2 by which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. 3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:" KJV

For added assurance of salvation, call upon the name of The Lord (The Lord Jesus Christ) for salvation:

Romans 10:8-13

"But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; 9 that if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. 12 For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. 13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved." KJV.
