Salvation in The Book of Acts and Baptism in the Book of Acts: (Part 1)
Salvation in The Book of Acts and Baptism in the Book of Acts:
4:7-12
talks about the only name under Heaven by which to be saved
Acts
4:7-12
Authorized
(King James) Version
“7 And
when they had set them in the midst, they asked, By what power, or by what
name, have ye done this? 8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said unto
them, Ye rulers of the people, and elders of Israel, 9 if we this day be
examined of the good deed done to the impotent man, by what means he is made
whole; 10 be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by
the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from
the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole. 11 This is the
stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the
corner. 12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other
name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.”
Regarding
Acts 2:38
Lets examine some verses from Acts chapter 2.
See 2:37-41 (BUT they being some if not all the people
may have already got The Holy Ghost because of 2:2-13?) About 3000 souls were
added (see 2:41) and see Acts 2:4, 2:17-21, 2:32-41
Acts 2:37-41
Authorized
(King James) Version
"37
Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter
and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? 38 Then
Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of
Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the
Holy Ghost. 39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all
that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. 40 And with many
other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this
untoward generation. 41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized:
and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls."
Acts
2:1-13
Authorized
(King James) Version
"And
when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one
place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty
wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared
unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. 4 And
they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other
tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. 5 And there were dwelling at
Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. 6 Now when this
was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because
that every man heard them speak in his own language. 7 And they were all amazed
and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak
Galilæans? 8 And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?
9 Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in
Judæa, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia, 10 Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt,
and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and
proselytes, 11 Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the
wonderful works of God. 12 And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying
one to another, What meaneth this? 13 Others mocking said, These men are full
of new wine."
Acts
2:17-21
Authorized
(King James) Version
"17
And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my
Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and
your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: 18 and
on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my
Spirit; and they shall prophesy: 19 and I will shew wonders in heaven above,
and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke: 20 the
sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great
and notable day of the Lord come: 21 and it shall come to pass, that whosoever
shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved."
Acts
2:32-41
Authorized
(King James) Version
"32
This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses. 33 Therefore being
by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise
of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear. 34 For
David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself, The Lord said
unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, 35 until I make thy foes thy
footstool. 36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God
hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.
37 Now
when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and
to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? 38 Then Peter
said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus
Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy
Ghost. 39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that
are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. 40 And with many
other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this
untoward generation. 41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized:
and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls."

Acts
1:1-8
Authorized
(King James) Version
"The
former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do
and teach, 2 until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the
Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen: 3 to
whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs,
being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the
kingdom of God: 4 and, being assembled together with them, commanded them that
they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father,
which, saith he, ye have heard of me. 5 For John truly baptized with water; but
ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. 6 When they
therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at
this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? 7 And he said unto them, It is
not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his
own power. 8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon
you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judæa, and
in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth."
Acts

beginning from the baptism of John, unto that same day that he was taken up
from us, must one be ordained to be a witness with us of his

Acts
10:34-38
Authorized
(King James) Version
"34
Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no
respecter of persons: 35 but in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh
righteousness, is accepted with him. 36 The word which God sent unto the
children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ: (he is Lord of all:) 37
that word, I say, ye know, which was published throughout all Judæa, and began
from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached; 38 how God anointed Jesus
of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and
healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him."
11:15-17
a recollection of something before with verse 16 starting the recollection but
verse 17 shows people getting the gift of the Holy Ghost by belief see also
Mark 1:7-9.
Acts
11:15-17
Authorized
(King James) Version
"15
And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the
beginning. 16 Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John
indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost. 17
Forasmuch then as God gave them the like gift as he did unto us, who believed
on the Lord Jesus Christ; what was I, that I could withstand God?"
Mark
1:7-9
Authorized
(King James) Version
"7
and preached, saying, There cometh one mightier than I after me, the latchet of
whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose. 8 I indeed have baptized
you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost. 9 And it came to
pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized
of John in Jordan."
13:23-26
is a recollection by Paul
Acts
13:23-26
Authorized
(King James) Version
"23
Of this man’s seed hath God according to his promise raised unto Israel a
Saviour, Jesus: 24 when John had first preached before his coming the baptism
of repentance to all the people of Israel. 25 And as John fulfilled his course,
he said, Whom think ye that I am? I am not he. But, behold, there cometh one
after me, whose shoes of his feet I am not worthy to loose. 26 Men and
brethren, children of the stock of Abraham, and whosoever among you feareth
God, to you is the word of this salvation sent."
In Acts
18:24-28 and 19:1-7 we see that Apollos knew only the baptism of John (seen in
18:25), after Paul explains that in 19:4 that John verily baptized with the
baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on Him
which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. Now in 19:5 they were
baptized in the name of The Lord Jesus, in 19:6 we will see Paul laid his hands
upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and
prophesied.
Acts
18:24-28
Authorized
(King James) Version
"24
And a certain Jew named Apollos, born at Alexandria, an eloquent man, and
mighty in the scriptures, came to Ephesus. 25 This man was instructed in the
way of the Lord; and being fervent in the spirit, he spake and taught
diligently the things of the Lord, knowing only the baptism of John. 26 And he
began to speak boldly in the synagogue: whom when Aquila and Priscilla had
heard, they took him unto them, and expounded unto him the way of God more
perfectly. 27 And when he was disposed to pass into Achaia, the brethren wrote,
exhorting the disciples to receive him: who, when he was come, helped them much
which had believed through grace: 28 for he mightily convinced the Jews, and
that publickly, shewing by the scriptures that Jesus was Christ."
Acts
19:1-7
Authorized
(King James) Version
"And
it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through
the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples, 2 he said unto
them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto
him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. 3 And he
said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John’s
baptism. 4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance,
saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after
him, that is, on Christ Jesus. 5 When they heard this, they were baptized in
the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the
Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied. 7 And all
the men were about twelve."
From
the Four Gospel Accounts and OT regarding John’s baptism
This may
or may not include all the scriptures that pertain to John’s baptism but I hope
it is enough information to suffice for your knowledge of the subject.
Isaiah
40:3
Authorized
(King James) Version
"3
The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD,
make straight in the desert a highway for our God."
Malachi
3:1-3
Authorized
(King James) Version
“Behold,
I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord,
whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the
covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the LORD of hosts. 2
But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth?
for he is like a refiner’s fire, and like fullers’ soap: 3 and he shall sit as
a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and
purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the LORD an offering in
righteousness.”
Matthew
3:1-17
Authorized
(King James) Version
"In
those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judæa, 2 and
saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. 3 For this is he that
was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the
wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. 4 And the
same John had his raiment of camel’s hair, and a leathern girdle about his
loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey. 5 Then went out to him
Jerusalem, and all Judæa, and all the region round about Jordan, 6 and were
baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.
7 But
when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said
unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath
to come? 8 Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance: 9 and think not to
say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that
God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham. 10 And now also
the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth
not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. 11 I indeed baptize
you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I,
whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost,
and with fire: 12 whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his
floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with
unquenchable fire.
13 Then
cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. 14 But
John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to
me? 15 And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it
becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him. 16 And Jesus,
when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the
heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a
dove, and lighting upon him: 17 and lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my
beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."
Matthew
11:7-18
Authorized
(King James) Version
"7
And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John,
What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind? 8 But
what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that
wear soft clothing are in kings’ houses. 9 But what went ye out for to see? A
prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet. 10 For this is he, of
whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall
prepare thy way before thee. 11 Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born
of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding
he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12 And from the
days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence,
and the violent take it by force. 13 For all the prophets and the law
prophesied until John. 14 And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was
for to come. 15 He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
16 But
whereunto shall I liken this generation? It is like unto children sitting in
the markets, and calling unto their fellows, 17 and saying, We have piped unto
you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not
lamented. 18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a
devil."
Matthew
21:24-27
Authorized
(King James) Version
“24 And
Jesus answered and said unto them, I also will ask you one thing, which if ye
tell me, I in like wise will tell you by what authority I do these things. 25
The baptism of John, whence was it? from heaven, or of men? And they reasoned
with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say unto us, Why
did ye not then believe him? 26 But if we shall say, Of men; we fear the
people; for all hold John as a prophet. 27 And they answered Jesus, and said,
We cannot tell. And he said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I
do these things.”
Matthew
21:32
Authorized
(King James) Version
"32
For John came unto you in the way of righteousness, and ye believed him not:
but the publicans and the harlots believed him: and ye, when ye had seen it,
repented not afterward, that ye might believe him."
Mark
1:1-11
Authorized
(King James) Version
"The
beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God; 2 as it is written in
the prophets, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare
thy way before thee. 3 The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye
the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
4 John
did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the
remission of sins. 5 And there went out unto him all the land of Judæa, and
they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan,
confessing their sins. 6 And John was clothed with camel’s hair, and with a
girdle of a skin about his loins; and he did eat locusts and wild honey; 7 and
preached, saying, There cometh one mightier than I after me, the latchet of
whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose. 8 I indeed have baptized
you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost.
9 And it
came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was
baptized of John in Jordan. 10 And straightway coming up out of the water, he
saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him: 11 and
there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am
well pleased."
Mark
1:14-15
Authorized
(King James) Version
"14
Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the
gospel of the kingdom of God, 15 and saying, The time is fulfilled, and the
kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel."
Mark
11:29-33
Authorized
(King James) Version
"29
And Jesus answered and said unto them, I will also ask of you one question, and
answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things. 30 The
baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men? answer me. 31 And they reasoned
with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why then
did ye not believe him? 32 But if we shall say, Of men; they feared the people:
for all men counted John, that he was a prophet indeed. 33 And they answered
and said unto Jesus, We cannot tell. And Jesus answering saith unto them,
Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things."
Luke
3:1-20
Authorized
(King James) Version
"Now
in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Cæsar, Pontius Pilate being
governor of Judæa, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip
tetrarch of Ituræa and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch
of Abilene, 2 Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came
unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness. 3 And he came into all the
country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of
sins; 4 as it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet,
saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the
Lord, make his paths straight. 5 Every valley shall be filled, and every
mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight,
and the rough ways shall be made smooth; 6 and all flesh shall see the
salvation of God.
7 Then said
he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of
vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 8 Bring forth
therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves,
We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these
stones to raise up children unto Abraham. 9 And now also the axe is laid unto
the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit
is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
10 And the
people asked him, saying, What shall we do then? 11 He answereth and saith unto
them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that
hath meat, let him do likewise. 12 Then came also publicans to be baptized, and
said unto him, Master, what shall we do? 13 And he said unto them, Exact no
more than that which is appointed you. 14 And the soldiers likewise demanded of
him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no
man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages.
15 And
as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John,
whether he were the Christ, or not; 16 John answered, saying unto them all, I
indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of
whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy
Ghost and with fire: 17 whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge
his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will
burn with fire unquenchable.
18 And
many other things in his exhortation preached he unto the people. 19 But Herod
the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip’s wife, and
for all the evils which Herod had done, 20 added yet this above all, that he
shut up John in prison."
Luke
16:15-17
Authorized
(King James) Version
"And
he said unto them, Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God
knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination
in the sight of God. 16 The law and the prophets were until John: since that
time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it. 17 And it
is easier for heaven and earth to pass, than one tittle of the law to
fail."
Luke
20:3-8
Authorized
(King James) Version
"And
he answered and said unto them, I will also ask you one thing; and answer me: 4
The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men? 5 And they reasoned with
themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why then
believed ye him not? 6 But and if we say, Of men; all the people will stone us:
for they be persuaded that John was a prophet. 7 And they answered, that they
could not tell whence it was. 8 And Jesus said unto them, Neither tell I you by
what authority I do these things."
John
1:15-27
Authorized
(King James) Version
"John
bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that
cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me. 16 And of his
fulness have all we received, and grace for grace. 17 For the law was given by
Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. 18 No man hath seen God at any
time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath
declared him.
19 And
this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from
Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou? 20 And he confessed, and denied not; but
confessed, I am not the Christ. 21 And they asked him, What then? Art thou
Elias? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No. 22
Then said they unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that
sent us. What sayest thou of thyself? 23 He said, I am the voice of one crying
in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet
Esaias.
24 And
they which were sent were of the Pharisees. 25 And they asked him, and said
unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias,
neither that prophet? 26 John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but
there standeth one among you, whom ye know not; 27 he it is, who coming after
me is preferred before me, whose shoe’s latchet I am not worthy to
unloose."
For more
information we will look at more verses:
John
1:28-42
Authorized
(King James) Version
"28
These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing.
29 The
next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God,
which taketh away the sin of the world. 30 This is he of whom I said, After me
cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me. 31 And I knew
him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come
baptizing with water. 32 And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit
descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him. 33 And I knew him
not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon
whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he
which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost. 34 And I saw, and bare record that this is
the Son of God.
35 Again
the next day after John stood, and two of his disciples; 36 and looking upon
Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God! 37 And the two disciples
heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. 38 Then Jesus turned, and saw them
following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi, (which
is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou? 39 He saith unto
them, Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that
day: for it was about the tenth hour. 40 One of the two which heard John speak,
and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. 41 He first findeth his
own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is,
being interpreted, the Christ. 42 And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus
beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas,
which is by interpretation, A stone."
John
5:31-46
Authorized
(King James) Version
"31
If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true. 32 There is another that
beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is
true. 33 Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth. 34 But I
receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye might be saved.
35 He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to
rejoice in his light. 36 But I have greater witness than that of John: for the
works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear
witness of me, that the Father hath sent me. 37 And the Father himself, which
hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any
time, nor seen his shape. 38 And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom
he hath sent, him ye believe not. 39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye
think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. 40 And ye
will not come to me, that ye might have life. 41 I receive not honour from men.
42 But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you. 43 I am come in my
Father’s name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name,
him ye will receive. 44 How can ye believe, which receive honour one of
another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only? 45 Do not think
that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, even
Moses, in whom ye trust. 46 For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed
me: for he wrote of me."
John
10:39-42
Authorized
(King James) Version
"39
Therefore they sought again to take him: but he escaped out of their hand, 40
and went away again beyond Jordan into the place where John at first baptized;
and there he abode. 41 And many resorted unto him, and said, John did no
miracle: but all things that John spake of this man were true. 42 And many
believed on him there."
